Fallout 4 Here There Be Monsters Quest Walkthrough and Rewards

The post-apocalyptic Boston Commonwealth in Fallout 4 is packed with atmospheric encounters, but few are as surprising as discovering a submerged pre-War Chinese vessel. Initiating the side quest titled Here There Be Monsters leads players into a fascinating piece of forgotten military history hidden right off the coastline. Understanding how to navigate the interior of the Yangtze submarine and complete Captain Zao's requests ensures you secure unique combat utility rewards.
Starting the Yangtze Submarine Quest
To begin this memorable mission, travel toward the Boston Harbor waterfront near the Shamrock Taphouse. On the docks, you will find a young boy named Donny Kowalski who claims to have spotted an underwater monster with a glowing eye. Swimming out to the metallic structure poking out of the water reveals the hatch to the Yangtze submarine.
Once inside, you meet Captain Zao, a ghoulified Chinese submarine captain who has remained with his vessel for over two centuries. Rather than initiating immediate combat, Zao asks for your assistance in repairing his ship's propulsion systems so he can finally return home. Agreeing to help sets off a two-part retrieval objective across the eastern Commonwealth.
Retrieving Parts from Saugus Ironworks and Internal Decks
The first item requested by Captain Zao is a Dampening Coil, located inside Saugus Ironworks. Navigating this location requires fighting past heavily armed Raiders known as the Forged, who favor flame-based weaponry. After clearing the main chamber, retrieve the coil component and safely report back to the submarine.
The second task involves retrieving a Warhead from an unlaunched missile within the lower compartments of the Yangtze. You must fight through feral ghoul remnants of the original crew to reach the missile storage section. Defeating the First Mate allows you to collect necessary passwords and extract the missile warhead safely.
Installing Components and Final Objectives
With both critical components collected, return to the vessel's primary reactor room to begin installations. Insert the Dampening Coil into its respective housing first, followed by the active nuclear warhead. Once both parts are properly secured, head back to the main deck and speak with Captain Zao to finish the repairs.
Zao expresses deep gratitude for your assistance in restoring his historical vessel to operational status. Completing the final conversation formally completes the quest line and issues experience points along with special equipment.
Quest Rewards and Tactical Missiles
Completing this quest awards valuable experience alongside several items including Pre-War Money and Caps. Successful speech checks during conversations can yield extra currency and Zao's personal sword. The primary reward consists of Homing Beacons, which can be thrown like standard grenades during outdoor combat.
Throwing a Homing Beacon signals the Yangtze to launch a tactical nuclear missile strike directly onto your designated target. This devastating tactical support provides massive area-of-effect damage against tough outdoor enemies across the Commonwealth.
